The safety of all persons driving on our roads is a constant concern for those comapnies who have staff driving on our roads on a day to day basis. There has been several research projects carried out over recent years in respect of working driver behaviour, covering such areas as collision rates, and driver fatigue as an example.
Employees who drive for there business are at an above average risk of accident involvement relative to the general driving population.
Drivers in the UK are 49% more likely to be involved in an road collision than an ordinary driver. Some of the reasons for this include time pressures, fatigue and psychological aggression or behaviour
Drivers who drive more than 80% of their annual mileage on work-related journeys had about 53% more accidents than similar drivers who had no work-related mileage. Many drivers admitted that they undertook long journeys after a full days work and performed potentially distracting tasks whilst driving, e.g. mobile phone conversations, or eating and drinking on the move. In addition it was also found that working drivers were more suseptable to falling asleep at the wheel than non-work related drivers.
